Mindset

I’ve worked with many different leaders, and a recent experience got me thinking: Why do some leaders naturally draw people in while others struggle to connect? What truly gives some leaders the ability to impact others positively?

Haven’t we all wondered about this at some point?

The answer has been right in front of us all along – authenticity

Authentic Leadership

Here’s what I noticed: While most people try to copy successful leaders they admire, the leaders who truly stand out simply stay true to themselves.

Have you ever had a boss who made you feel like you were walking on eggshells? Can you imagine working efficiently if someone is constantly ordering you around?

The world is changing, and so are our expectations of leaders. Authoritarian leadership is old news – it’s no longer effective or relevant. Today’s workplace demands a more human approach to leadership.

Being authentic at work isn’t just nice to have anymore. It’s essential. An authentic leader’s values are clearly reflected in their behaviour. They’re not perfect, and they’re not trying to be someone else. They’re just being themselves—human, honest, open about mistakes, and not afraid to show vulnerability.

What Makes Authentic Leaders Different

Experts have identified four key qualities of authentic leaders:

  1. Self-Awareness – They understand their strengths, emotions, and how they affect others.
  2. Relational Transparency – They communicate openly and honestly.
  3. Balanced Processing – They listen to different viewpoints and make fair, thoughtful decisions.
  4. Strong Moral Compass – They do what’s right, not what’s easy or popular.

Where Do You Start?

Ask yourself this simple question: When was the last time you felt completely yourself at work?

That feeling? That’s your authentic leadership compass.

RememberAuthentic leadership isn’t about being flawless. It’s about being real!
